From November 4 to 5, the 3rd World Championship in lake trout fishing took place in Lithuania. It was the first time a world-class competition was held there.
From November 4 to 5, Lithuania hosted the 3rd World Championship in Lake Trout Fishing.
It was the first time a competition of this level was held in the country.
A total of 11 national teams took part in the championship. The Ukrainian team was represented by a delegation of 8 people, including 5 athletes (4 main and 1 reserve) and three coaches.
The location for the event was carefully chosen — the picturesque lake in the town of Vasaknos is a popular spot for trout fishing tournaments.
“Lithuania is a very beautiful country that has more than 6,000 lakes despite its relatively small territory. The venue where the competition took place is a well-equipped complex with several lakes used for fish breeding and stocking. The lake used for the championship was pre-stocked with rainbow trout,”
said Kyrylo Bezverkhyi, Head of the Department at the Ukrainian Fishing Sport Federation.
According to the rules of the championship, all fish caught must be immediately released. Athletes are allowed to use only spinning tackle and exclusively hard artificial lures — such as spinners and various types of wobblers.
“The competition lasted two days, with each day consisting of 10 rounds of 20 minutes each. Athletes move along the lake, changing sectors. That means 10 ‘duels’ per day, each in a different sector against an opponent from another country. The goal is to catch more fish than your opponent using your spinning rod and available lure arsenal,”added Kyrylo Bezverkhyi.
The Ukrainian team placed in the top five.The host country, Lithuania, won the championship.Italy came in second, Latvia secured third place, and Germany finished fourth.
“We lost by just a narrow margin,” Kyrylo explained. “The gap between us and Germany, Latvia, and Italy was only 1–2 points — literally one or two fish determined the prize positions. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to the podium, but we gained invaluable experience.”
The general partner of Team Ukraine for the 2023 championship was the Aurora multimarket chain.
