The Aurora multimarket chain joined the nationwide charitable campaign “Shkarpetuysia” organized by the All-Ukrainian charitable organization “Down Syndrome” to mark World Down Syndrome Day.
As part of the initiative, we purchased 200 pairs of colorful socks to support children and adults with Down syndrome and their families, as well as to once again draw attention to the importance of inclusion and acceptance in society. Our employees also joined the campaign: they could fill out a form and receive socks free of charge, and on March 21 share photos wearing mismatched socks on social media using the hashtag #shkarpetuysia.
“Shkarpetuysia” is part of the global Lots of Socks movement initiated by Down Syndrome International. Every year on March 21, people around the world wear colorful socks as a symbol of support and acceptance. The date was not chosen by chance: it is associated with the presence of an extra, third copy of chromosome 21 in people with Down syndrome—under a microscope, chromosomes resemble small striped socks.
This year’s socks carry special meaning, as their design is based on the artwork of Sofia from Lviv—a girl with Down syndrome, an artist and an athlete. Her drawing “Dove of Peace,” which won the competition “Me, My Dream and What I Love,” has become a symbol of belief in peace, the future, and the power of dreams regardless of circumstances.
We believe that even small actions can help build a more open and supportive environment. Anyone can join the initiative, including by making a charitable donation to the All-Ukrainian charitable organization “Down Syndrome.” The funds raised are directed toward support programs for people with Down syndrome and the development of their communities.
